WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM : " COVID-19 WAS A TEST IN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY "

Report dated 24.09.2022 on "My carbon: An approach to inclusive and sustainable cities"

Our world is changing - major community trends for sustainable cities

The past five to seven years have seen major social, environmental and technological developments that can contribute to the realization of "My Carbon" initiatives to shape the future toward smart and sustainable cities.

In this regard, I would like to mention three developments:

1. COVID-19 was a test in social responsibility - A huge number of unimaginable public health restrictions were adopted by billions of citizens around the world. There were numerous examples worldwide of maintaining social distance, wearing masks, mass vaccinations, and acceptance of contact detection applications for public health that demonstrated the core of individual social responsibility.

2. Technology breakthroughs of the fourth industrial revolution - Advances in emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain and digitization can enable personal carbon emissions tracking, awareness and also individual advice on low-carbon and ethical choices for consumption of products and services. The World Economic Forum's Scale 360 initiative shows the use of fourth industrial revolution technologies throughout the life cycle of products and services.

Great progress has been made in smart home technologies, transportation choices with carbon implications, the rollout of smart meters that offer individual choices to reduce their energy-related emissions, the development of new personalized apps to account for personal emissions, and better personalized choices for food and consumption-related emissions. AI can also help strengthen business models for the circular economy, such as product-as-a-service models, demand forecasting and smart asset management by combining real-time and historical data from products and users.

There is a significant number of programs and applications that allow citizens to contribute to carbon emissions by making them deeply aware of personal carbon choices for food, transportation, home energy and lifestyle.

These energy efficiency apps provide suggestions and statistics on greenhouse gas emissions and offer ways to reduce your personal footprint. Tracking home energy consumption and motivating people to change their lifestyle and do your part to improve the environment.

3. Increased awareness and commitment to nature and the environment - In recent years, there has been increased awareness and public concern about climate change, especially among young people. The UNDP's "Peoples' Climate Vote" shows that more than 64% of people believe that climate change is a global emergency. A new Pew Research Center survey of 17 advanced economies shows strong concern about the personal impact of global climate change, with 80% of citizens saying they would be willing to change their ways of living and working to combat the effects of climate change. Young adults, who have been at the forefront of some of the most prominent climate change protests in recent years, are more concerned about the personal consequences of a warming planet than their older counterparts in many public surveys.

What's next? Sustainable cities enabled by smart communities

The three trends provide strong evidence to enable a social movement for "My Carbon" initiatives by enabling public-private partnerships to help put this program together. A three-pronged approach is proposed to shape this movement.

Such economic measures should be supported by city government through extensive discussions among stakeholders to achieve a fair and inclusive approach.

The levers of cognitive activation and social norms will be much more effective through civic engagement programs. Innovative AI and machine-learning capabilities could help in capturing embedded emissions in goods and services, and could help in providing tailored and timely advice to individuals on how to reduce their lifestyle emissions.

Well, well. That's clear. Covid-19 was an orchestrated puppet theater to teach the people ( forced ) to obey and follow imposed rules - no matter how absurd. Unimaginable ( as the WEF itself points out).
