The WHO is facing much opposition to its draft of new pandemic treaty ( officially : The International Health Regulations ).
Not only from a multitude of member states but also from citizens and various human rights organizations who strongly oppose to the deletion of article 1 of the current treaty ( on fundamental human rights and freedoms ) but also on the granting of absolute authority to one person, being Tedros himself.
Tedros is in such tight straits now that he issued a press release on March 17, 2023.
"The new international health rules do not give WHO the power to dictate health rules to any country nor will it give WHO any power to dictate rules " ( whereby he actually says the same thing twice )
" WHO will only assist countries on the rules they agree on " ( with whom ? )
" An accord that includes all the challenges we have experienced in the current pandemic is essential to ensure that the world does not make the same mistakes " The rest of his arguments are nothing short but pure emotional blackmail based on nothing.
His current statement is one to remember.
With his current declarations, he will have to amend his draft treaty, reinstate Article 1 and remove his name as sole authority. The WHO is only authorized to make collegial decisions such as declaring a pandemic for example.
Not that this would change much about established practice.
During the Covid pandemic ( which was not a pandemic ) he encountered on various occasions quite some resistance from members of the board of directors and various directors. They were shunted out, fired or resigned themselves.
On paper, however, granting sole decision-making rights to the Director General ( Tedros ) can now be immediately relegated to the realm of fantasy.
