On 04 January 2023, the European Union, under the auspices of Ursula Von der Leyen, issued a protocol authorising the food industry to incorporate insects in a range of foods. This authorisation will come into force on 24 January 2023.
For domesticated crickets, labelling is not mandatory. An indication on the packaging is only required if the product contains powder of the insect Acheta domesticus or house cricket.
So, in a near future, you will be eating insects without knowing it.
Insects may now be incorporated into the following foods :
- Multicereal bread
- Small multigrain bread rolls
- Crackers and baguettes
- Muesli bars
- Processed potato products
- pizza
- dishes with legumes and vegetables
- general pasta and whey powder products
- and much more
It is recommended - especially for people with allergies - to read the EU directive thoroughly and, from now on, always ask about the ingredients of the products they wish to buy before consuming them. Best solution to avoid any health problems is to make your own bread and pizza dough and also prepare all meals yourself.
