The discredited chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Richard Sharp, resigned on Friday after a report revealed that he failed to disclose his involvement in facilitating a loan of nearly $1 million to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Sharp claimed the breach was "inadvertent and not material", but said he resigned to "put the interests of the BBC first". He had previously denied that he was involved in the scheme or that there was a conflict of interest, as the loan took place before his appointment as head of public service broadcasting.
Adam Heppinstall's report, however, shows that Sharp "failed to disclose potential conflicts of interest" to the cross-party panel of MPs that advised ministers on who to appoint.
The former banker was under pressure to resign after it was revealed that he acted as an intermediary when Johnson sought the loan, weeks before the then prime minister appointed Sharp to his post in 2021. Sharp told lawmakers in February that he had "not arranged the loan" and suggested he was acting as a "kind of introduction agency".
You scratch my back, I scratch yours. I, the banker, give you, Boris Johnson, Prime Minister of the UK, a loan of almost $1 million that you cannot actually claim because your repayment capacity, given your income and your age, is not good enough, and in return for this service, you appoint me big boss of the BBC, which is sponsored by the Soros Foundation.
Anyone who still wonders how it is possible for a banker to suddenly become the head of the UK's national media outlet ? Well, this is how they do it.
