Anyone watching this promotional video from Ectolife for the first time immediately thinks this is straight out of some SciFi movie. A fantasy.
It is. So far, anyway, but impossible it is not, according to science. There is already plenty of successful experimentation with artificial wombs for animals.
From there, it is only a small step to artificial wombs for women who do not want to carry a pregnancy to term or are infertile and today rely on a surrogate mother or on adoption or even for couples who keep trying and do not succeed and also for couples who would like to have a designer baby and decide what colour of eyes, hair length and build their child(ren) will have.
Hashem Al-Ghaili, producer and filmmaker with a background in molecular biology argues that artificial womb facilities (which could manufacture up to 30,000 babies) could be a reality within a maximum of 10 years if ethical restrictions are lifted.
Every feature mentioned in the video is 100% science-based and conceptually already achieved by scientists, according to Al-Ghaili. All that remains to be done is to build a prototype that combines all the functions in one device.
Al-Ghaili believes that his "product" will be widely used worldwide within 10 to 15 years. People will become familiar with the technology.
Hashem Al-Ghaili ( °11.08.1990 ) was born in Yemen and currently lives and works in Berlin. He is a welcomed guest at the World Economic Forum and a speaker at Davos as a " science communicator ". Apparently, his ideas resonate well with the general public. He already has over 20 million followers on social media.
How is the man so sure that his concept will be a reality within 10 to 15 years and widely used worldwide? Does he have information that allows him to proclaim this out loud or does he take his fantasy for reality?
Imagine that today's youth, because of one fatal decision in 2020 or 2021, turns out to be infertile within 10 years or can reproduce only with great difficulty.
Imagine for a moment that another option exists by then that does allow conception via an external artificial bearded mother and also allows the choice of determining the child's gender and specific characteristics.
Will this option be successful if there is no other option left open?
Yes, it will.
